VTG 30s Cascade Caverns Carter Caves State Park KY Travel Brochure Olive Hill
VTG 30s Cascade Caverns Carter Caves State Park KY Travel Brochure Olive Hill
Looking through some of my old paper that I collect, came across this, I believe, 1930's,
Cascade Caves, large size Travel Brochure!
I believe it to be Rare, and have never seen another one like it.
Cascade Cave, now Cascade Caverns,  and part of Carter Caves State Park, established in 1946,
is one of the largest of over 200 caves in Carter County, KY, near Olive Hill, KY, and Grayson, KY.
Carter and Cascade Caves are the best-known caverns in eastern Kentucky. Located in north-central Carter County, the Carter and Cascade Cave system is comprised of more than 20 caverns.
But there are many more caves on private property in this area, including the once famous, around the turn of the century,
Oligonuck Caverns, in Carter City, KY, which closed after the railroad washed out in  the 1934 flood.
Noted for its large chambers and numerous cave formations.
In 1959, Cascade Cave, once privately owned and operated, became a part of the Carter Cave State Park System.
You pass the sign for this, about 1 miles before entering the actual Carter Caves State Park.
Brochure was printed by Litho in U.S.A. Gibson & Perin Co, (since 1893), in Cin (Cincinnati), OH.
Brochure is in very good condition, except for back page where map is shown.
Looks to have been pasted in an album at an earlier date, which was popular in that era.
    Measures, closed, 9 1/2 " by 6 1/4". Open, measures 12" by 18".
Shown to visitors since 1925, the cavern is made up a series of parallel passages.  They are filled with dripstone formations of different types. The entrance to Cascade Cave is located on the side of one of the many sinkholes in the area. Highlights of the cavern include “Counterfeiter’s Room” named for the supposed use of the cave by counterfeiters. The “Lake Room” is so-called for the large pool of water located there. Other interesting points in and around Cascade Cave are: “Cathedral Room”, “The Hanging Gardens of King Solomon”, “Cardross Castle”, “Ice –capped Mountains”, and “Temple Bells.” Cascade Cave also has a beautiful 30 foot underground waterfall.  The main room you first walk into, they used to hold dances in for locals, back in the early days!
This is one of the Most Beautiful Parks in Northeastern, KY, and maybe in KY!
Very historical area, the caverns were used by early Native Americans, and later discovered by Pioneers.
In the War of 1812, saltpeter was leached for the manufacture of black power in one of the caves in the park.
You would never know all the amazing beauty in this area, driving by on Interstate I-64,
which wasn't here when this brochure was made.
We ride horses here and in this area, (which you can also hike) and the breathtaking views are to die for!
We actually camped at Carter Caves in Oct 2020, in the horse camp, and took a night Lantern Tour of this cave!
Hadn't been through it since I was a child. There is also an old road along the edge, and above that rock highwall, and below the top rock formations, shown as a view from Hawks Nest,  called the Devil's Backbone, that we ride through there on!
Don't miss adding this Rare, and Early piece of Travel, and Carter County, KY History, to your collection!!
