    The Claflin family were industrialists, politicians, and philanthropists.  Along with operating a tannery and shoe factory, William Claflin was Governor of Massachusetts from 1869 to 1872.  William Claflin defeated John Quincy Adams three times and served as Governor for those three terms.
    William Claflin was anti-slavery, pro-woman suffrage, and supported charters for Wellesley College and Mount Holyoke College (women's colleges).
